Ben Haire is a talented young violist who is undertaking his Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the prestigious and highly contested, Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As the recipient of the Peter Davidson Undergraduate Scholarship in his first year of study, Ben has since been the section leader of the SBS Youth Orchestra, participated in his sixth consecutive Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp program, become a founding member and section leader of the Sydney North Chamber Orchestra (which recently completed their successful tour of Colombia in 2013), recorded for artists including Thelma Plum, Heymun Tan and Pluto Jonze, performed live with Packwood and dynamic folk duo, The Falls, as well as become part of the Sydney Symphony’s Sinfonia Development Program for the 2013 season.
Having received both his Associate and Licentiate of Music from the Australian Music Examinations Board, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Music (Orchestral) from the University of Tasmania, he is well grounded in Classical music tradition and has a keen passion for chamber music. Through lessons undertaken as a Music Scholar at Sydney Grammar School under the tutelage of acclaimed saxophonist, Sandy Evans, Ben was enthralled by the world of music outside his own art form. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Vlad Khusid and Sandy, Ben has endeavoured to explore the realm of possibility by engaging in performances in the style of jazz, folk, tango as well as rock. Alongside his classical training, Ben has explored the passionate energy of tango and excitement of jazz, as well as performing with members of the JMC Academy in a collaborative performance of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir for their showcase performance.
Through these opportunities, Ben has learned of the flexibility of performers and the freedom with which any musician can explore other styles. It is with this ideology of passion for music and the desire to explore what is possible through the freedom of expression that music offers that Ben wishes to inspire the next generation of talented musicians who are open minded to the wonderful world of musical expression.
